Character quotation

"I had no Freedom. I had nothing. With Hitler around, maybe I'd even get a piece of ass now and then and more then a dollar a week allowance. As far as I could rationalize, I had nothing to protect." (Page 262)

Almost everybody is anti-Nazi in school, in public and in America. But Henry Jr questions everything all the time; he never goes with the flow. After he went to a Nazi-meeting he found out that he didn't belong there and also that he weren't a Nazi.

Environment quotation

"Everything was eternally dreary, dismal, damned. Even the weather was insolent and bitchy. It was either unbearably hot for weeks on end, or it rained, and when it rained it rained for five or six days." (Page 271)

I think it's interesting to get a view of how the weather's like where Henry Jr lives. Although he probably exaggerate a lot, considering his state of mind while expressing his feelings.

Character quotation

"They were beautiful nothings. They made me sick. I hated them. They were part of the nightmare that always haunted me in one way or another." (Page 236)

Henry Jr now has graduated and got a job at a department store called Mears-Starbuck. He was embarrassed because he was the toughest guy in school and now working for a low salary. And one day he saw a gang from school who graduated the same day. Later on Henry Jr would fight the leader.

Environment quotation

"I couldn't see anymore - my eyes were blinded by flashes of yellow and green light, purple light - then a terrific shot of RED . . . I felt myself going down." (Page 238)

Henry Jr is now fighting the gang leader on the roof on top of the department store. For a start the leader, Jimmy Newhall, was too fast for Henry Jr and punched really hard. After a while all Henry Jr could see were different flashes of colours, but Henry Jr would win at the end.

Character quotation

"I had a good body. But nobody would notice that. I had a good chest and great legs but nobody would see that. (Page 179)

Henry Jr now is at the beach. He got his acne covering his back and chest. Everybody just saw his spots and boils although he was well built with a great body. This acne problem of his is a major problem.

Environment quotation

We were the Blues. Crawling through those bushes was pure hell. It was hot. There were bugs, dust, rocks, thorns. I didn't know were I was. (Page 189)

In their school they got a group called ROTC and can be compared to the Swedish FBU. In ROTC they practice war for an example. As a member Henry Jr participate in the training and thinks it's pure hell as the quotation says.

Character quotation

"I didn't have a job, I didn't go to school. I didn't do anything. I was bandaged, I was standing on the corner smoking a cigarette. I was a though man, I was a dangerous man. I knew things." (Page 158)

Henry Jr now has big problems with acne. The pimples are all over his face, chest and back. But at the hospital they now think they found a way to cure his acne and that's with bandage.
With his face covered with bandage he now feels more secure and got a really good self-confidence.

Environment quotation

"I went into my bedroom and stretched out on the bed. Why did they want to see me? What could they do? There was nothing to be done. There was nothing to talk about." (Page 151)

This happens before he gets the bandage and while his self-confidence is very low. Henry Jr got an unexpected visit from two guys from school but he didn't want to show his face. If his skin was perfectly normal he probably would open the door and talked to them, but...

Character quotation

"He hit me again. But the tears weren't coming. My eyes were strangely dry. I thought about killing him. That there must be a way to kill him. In a couple of years I could beat him to death. But I wanted him now." (Page 130)

Henry Jr's father is punishing him for a stupid thing he did in school. And Henry Jr gets beaten by his father a several times a week. But as I said before, Henry Jr is growing bigger physically and now his eager to kill is rising. It's going to be interesting to see how it all develops.

Environment quotation

"The nurse and the orderly pushed him down the hall and through some swinging doors. Martinez was under a sheet but he wasn't dead because the sheet wasn't pulled over his face." (Page 140

Henry Jr’s at the hospital to get his acne checked by a Doctor. In the waiting room he can hear people scream from the examination rooms. I can imagine that Henry Jr must have been slightly worried when he saw Martinez in that...

Character quotation

"The 5th grade was a little better. The other students seemed less hostile and I was growing larger physically. I still wasn't chosen for the homeroom teams but I was threatened less." (Page 83)

This quotation speaks pretty much for how he is feeling about life.
Things are starting to feel better and getting better in general. The kids in school are showing him more respect and treat him better although it could be better in many kinds of ways.

Environment quotation

"We went down into a cellar, under the house. It was dark and damp and we stood a while until our eyes grew used to the gloom. Then I could see a number of barrels." (Page 100)

Henry Jr has been led into a friend's cellar where there is alot of wine barrels.
This quotation can also be used in Henry Jr's life. At first it all seemed dark and like there were no way out. But after a while he could distinguish good things in a bad environment.

Henry Jr is happy because he got a friend named Frank who used to be with the "tough guys".
And he's also happy because the latest weeks he has been allowed playing football with these kids.

Henry became vary mad when he caught he's son playing ball, so he let Henry Jr mow the lawn. Henry Jr became very sad because it was a Saturday and all the other children were playing football except him.

After hours of mowing Henry Jr decided that he was finished, so Henry started inspecting the lawn for hairs... he found two. Henry took his son to the bathroom where he hit him on the ass with a razor strop. While Henry Jr felt pain he were also confused, he couldn't understand why he got beaten when he did such a good and long job.

Frank and Henry Jr went to an air show by hitch-hiking. The man they lifted with seemed to like children, and not in a good way.
As soon as they got out of the car they ran in to the air show area, terrified to death.

At the end of the air show they had a parachute...
