One night Mary woke up by a lot of sounds in the house.
When she came down she saw Ephraim standing between two soldiers, and she understood that the time for them was out now when they had found him.
She didn't really knew if she should be sad or happy for this new situation, because Le Grant had been so nice to her, and she didn't saw a life of luxury and affluence as a problem.

But after a while when Ephraim had told her that it was included in the plan she felt bad, her son was out there risking his life to save her and she had have the plans to follow Le Grant instead of him.
But now when she knew their plans she decided to go home with them again, and the next day they succeeded to run away from their watchers.

Black Fox were waiting for them in their canoe when they came down to the water, and they began to take the same way as they had done when the came to Mount Royale.

But when they came to the big lake, the wind began to blow harder and the canoe foundered.
When they again woke up three men was standing over them with spears and painted faces.
Mary knew that they were Indians, but she also knew that they had a violent and terrifying reputation.

But I knew we were safe. For the moment, at least. They would not kill us as we lay in this state, for to do so would be cowardly. (page 240.)

Even if this people don’t have a reputation to be nice, I feel relief that Mary isn't with the Frenchmen anymore.
Because I don't think she could run away from her reputation and fate for to long if she should had stayed with them, I'm afraid that she then should have met the same fate as her grandmother.

And if I remember correctly this would be the last trip for Mary, because earlier in the book Agnes talked about a history that she had heard from her grandmother, were a white powwaw came to a Indian village with her two sons (Black Fox and Ephraim.)
Agnes also told that she should stay there for the rest of her happy life! : D
